Choosing Business Check Stock and Security Features
How to choose business checks: manual vs. QuickBooks format, common check security features, and which bank details to confirm before you order new checks.
Business checks need to work with your bank and your accounting software, and they should make tampering harder. Here is what to think about before you order.
Check format
Manual or book-style checks are written by hand. Computer checks (such as QuickBooks format checks) are printed from accounting software. Confirm which layout your software expects (check on top, middle or bottom) before you order.
Common security features
- Microprinting: tiny text that looks like a solid line and blurs when copied.
- Void pantograph: a hidden pattern that shows a word like VOID on many photocopies.
- Chemically sensitive paper: paper that shows stains or marks if someone tries to erase or alter ink with chemicals.
- Security screen or warning box: a printed notice that lists the features on the check.

Bank information
Your routing number, account number and starting check number are printed in the MICR line at the bottom of the check. Copy them carefully from a voided check or from your bank, and proof them before printing. Your bank can confirm any requirements.
Good habits
Store blank checks securely, track check numbers and reconcile your account regularly.
