Notary Seal and Stamp Basics: What to Check First

General notary seal basics: inked stamps vs. embossers and what seals usually show. Requirements vary by state, so confirm the current rules with your state.

Important: Notary seal rules are set by each state, and they differ. This guide is general information, not legal advice. Before ordering, check the current rules from your state's notary commissioning office, which is often the Secretary of State.

Inked stamp or embosser?

An inked stamp leaves an image that copies and scans clearly. An embosser presses a raised impression into the paper. Some states require one type, some allow either, and some notaries use both.

Information a seal often includes

Depending on your state, a seal may need to show your name as commissioned, the words "Notary Public," your state or county, a commission number or a commission expiration date. Your state sets the exact content, shape, size and ink color.
