Wedding Invitation Timeline: When to Order and Mail
A general wedding stationery timeline: when to send save-the-dates, order and mail invitations, set RSVP dates, and prepare day-of and thank-you cards.
Planning stationery early keeps proofing, printing and addressing from becoming a last-minute rush. These are common guidelines; adjust them for your wedding.
6 to 12 months before: save-the-dates
Save-the-dates are often sent 6 to 8 months ahead, and earlier for destination weddings or holiday weekends.
About 3 to 4 months before: order invitations
Allow time for design, proofing, printing and addressing. Order a few extra invitations for keepsakes and late additions.
6 to 8 weeks before: mail invitations
Many couples mail invitations about 6 to 8 weeks before the wedding. Take a finished invitation to the post office to confirm postage.
RSVP date
Set the RSVP date about 3 to 4 weeks before the wedding so you have time to give final counts to your venue and caterer. You can also collect RSVPs online with a free event page.
Day-of stationery and thank-you cards
Programs, menus, place cards and welcome signs are finalized once your guest list is set. Thank-you cards are traditionally sent within a few months after the wedding.
